Privacy Policy

Ask It Log It is a calorie and nutrition tracker for iPhone. “We” and “us” mean its developer, shown as the seller on its App Store page. This policy explains what the app collects, where it goes, and the choices you have.

What stays on your iPhone

• Your food log. Meals, amounts, calories and nutrients, water, goals, favorites and settings are stored in the app on your iPhone. They’re removed when you delete them or delete the app. Like other app data, iOS may include them in your iPhone’s backups to iCloud or a computer, which Apple handles under its own privacy policy.
• Your voice. When you tap Log it or Ask it, the app listens through the microphone and turns your speech into text on your iPhone, using Apple’s on-device speech recognition. The audio isn’t recorded, kept or sent anywhere.
• Understanding your meals. On iPhones with Apple Intelligence, Apple’s on-device model works out what you said, and a nutrition database built into the app (from USDA FoodData Central) supplies calories and nutrients. None of this leaves your iPhone.
• Widgets. The app keeps a copy of today’s totals on your iPhone so its widgets can show them. Water you add from a widget waits there until the app saves it to your log.

Cloud lookups, only if you allow them

Some meals are hard to estimate on the phone, like restaurant dishes or a photo of your plate. For these, the app can ask Claude. The app asks your permission before anything is sent, and you can turn cloud lookups off at any time in the app’s Settings.

What’s sent with each lookup

• What you said or typed about the meal, or the photo you chose and any note you added. Photos are resized and sent without their location or other photo details.
• The date on your iPhone, to count the day’s lookups.
• A random identifier for the app on your iPhone, with proof from Apple’s App Attest service that the request comes from the genuine app. The identifier isn’t linked to your name, your Apple Account or anything else about you.
• If you subscribe to Ask It Log It Pro, the signed purchase record the App Store gives the app, so our server can confirm your subscription with Apple. It includes details like the plan, transaction numbers and dates, but not your name, Apple Account or payment details.

Where it goes

Our server runs on Amazon Web Services (AWS) in the United States. It passes your meal to Claude AI models made by Anthropic, through Amazon Bedrock, an AWS service, and sends the estimate back to your iPhone. Anthropic doesn’t receive your meal: the models run inside AWS, and AWS doesn’t share what’s sent to them with Anthropic.

What’s kept

• Your meal or photo is used for the lookup and then discarded. Our server doesn’t store it, and our logs don’t record it.
• Amazon Bedrock doesn’t store it for the models we use, and neither AWS nor Anthropic uses it to train AI models. One exception: if Amazon’s automated safety systems flag a photo as child sexual abuse material, Amazon may keep and review it and report it as the law requires.
• To enforce daily and monthly limits and keep costs in check, our server keeps a count of lookups and their cost for each app identifier: daily counts for two days, and monthly totals until about five weeks after the month ends.
• For App Attest, our server keeps the app’s public key. It’s deleted after a year in which the app hasn’t used cloud lookups.
• For subscriptions, our server records which app identifiers used each subscription during a month, to limit how many devices one subscription covers. These records are deleted about five weeks after the month ends.
• Our server’s technical logs note things like response times, which AI model answered, and errors. They never include your meals, photos or identifiers, and are deleted after 30 days.

Subscriptions and payments

Ask It Log It Pro is sold through the App Store, and Apple handles payment. We never receive your name, Apple Account or payment details. Apple gives us sales reports that don’t identify you.

Apple services

The app uses Apple’s on-device speech recognition and Apple Intelligence, the App Store for purchases, and App Attest, which checks with Apple that the app is genuine. If you’ve chosen to share analytics with app developers in your iPhone’s settings, Apple may send us crash reports and usage statistics that don’t identify you. Apple’s privacy policy covers what Apple collects.

This website and email

askitlogit.com has no cookies, ads, analytics or tracking, and loads nothing from other companies. GitHub hosts it and logs visitors’ IP addresses for security, as the GitHub Privacy Statement describes.

If you email us, we use your email address and what you write only to answer you.

What we don’t do

• No advertising, and no advertising or analytics tools in the app or on this website.
• We don’t track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
• We don’t sell or rent your data, or share it for advertising.
• We don’t build a profile of you. We couldn’t: we don’t know who you are.

Your choices and rights

• See or delete your log. Everything is in the app. Delete entries there, or delete the app to remove all of it from your iPhone.
• Turn off cloud lookups. In the app’s Settings, under Cloud lookups. Everything else keeps working on your iPhone.
• Records on our server. The counts and keys we keep aren’t linked to your identity, so we usually can’t tell which are yours, and they’re deleted on the schedule above. If you have a question or a request about them, or about your rights under laws such as the GDPR or California’s privacy laws, email us and we’ll help as far as we can.
• Legal basis. Where the law asks for one: cloud lookups rely on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time in Settings. Lookup limits and the checks that the app is genuine rely on our legitimate interest in keeping the service available and affordable.

Children

Ask It Log It isn’t directed to children under 13, or the minimum age where you live, and we don’t knowingly collect personal information from them.

Where your data is processed

Our server and the AWS services it uses are in the United States. If you use cloud lookups from elsewhere, your meal is processed there.

Security

Everything between the app and our server travels encrypted (HTTPS). App Attest and Apple’s signed purchase records let our server refuse requests that don’t come from the genuine app. No system is perfectly secure, so we keep only what’s described here.

Changes to this policy

If we change how the app handles data, we’ll update this policy and the date at the top. If a change affects what’s sent from your iPhone, the app will ask for your permission again before sending anything new.
